Baton Rouge Gallery

The Baton Rouge Gallery Center for Contemporary Art is proud to offer contemporary art exhibitions to our community. The Gallery also offers special performances and a spoken word program. Art exhibitions at the Gallery feature current works of its artist members. The Gallery also hosts special traveling exhibitions and welcomes special guest artists. The Baton Rouge Gallery, a non-profit contemporary art gallery, is located in BREC’s historic City Park Pavilion. One of the oldest professional artist cooperative galleries in the United States, the Gallery was founded in 1966 downtown and moved to the City Park location in 1984. The pavilion was originally the pool house for City Park built in the late 1920’s and was closed in 1963. Monthly exhibitions at the Gallery feature the work of current artist members including photographers, painters, sculptors, stained-glass artists, printmakers, ceramists, multi-media, and installation artists. The opening receptions are held for each exhibition on the first Wednesday of every month from 7 – 9pm and are free and open to everyone. One of the events is Music & Movies on the Lawn, which features a screening of silent films on a huge movie screen outside on the back lawn, May – October. The music is provided by local musicians who do a live interpretive score to the films. Movie titles are from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Another program is the Flatscape Video Series held indoors January – March and features experimental art video from the 1960’s to the present. Free popcorn made in an old-fashioned popper is served and admission for both programs is $5 and free for BRG members. The Gallery’s spoken word program, Sundays @ 4, showcases the work of established and emerging literary talents from both the local and national scene. A variety of poets, fiction writers, and storytellers make this an exciting, ongoing event. Sundays @ 4 is always free and open to the public.
