American Museum of Asmat Art

The American Museum of Asmat Art at the University of St. Thomas is dedicated to the study, preservation, and presentation of Asmat art forms. Objects in the collection reflect Asmat history, oral traditions, spiritual beliefs, and daily activities; they offer insight into the perspectives of individuals and communities.

The AMAA @ UST provides students, faculty, and scholars with access to quality objects from Papua, Indonesia for research and study purposes. Graduate assistants in the art history program gain hands-on museum experience by working directly with the collection. The AMAA @ UST expands upon past and ongoing efforts to support and understand Asmat art and culture by the Diocese of Agats in Papua, Indonesia and members of the Crosier Catholic Order.
